Frequently Asked Questions

Using GotBack

How does matching work?

Our system automatically compares lost and found posts based on descriptions, date and locations to find potential matches.

Why didn’t I get a match?

Matches depend on how closely descriptions, categories, and locations align. Try adding more details or updating the location to improve match chances. Or maybe someone hasn’t found it yet.

What happens when a finder clicks “Claim” on a found post?

A private conversation opens between the finder and the post owner, and the owner sees the claim in their Inbox. Identities stay anonymous until the owner accepts. The owner reviews any proof shared in chat and decides whether it’s really their item.

What happens when GotBack finds a match between two posts?

Both the owner and the finder are notified, and a private conversation opens so they can compare details. Identities stay anonymous until the owner confirms it’s the right item by selecting “It is mine”.

What happens when the owner selects “It is mine”?

The owner accepts the claim or match. If a reward was set, the saved card is charged immediately and the funds go into escrow — held by GotBack, not paid to the finder yet. Both users’ names and pictures are revealed inside the conversation so they can arrange the handover.

What happens when the owner chooses “Release”?

Release confirms the owner has received the item. The reward is released from escrow to the finder (paid out to their bank via Stripe), the post is marked as returned and archived, and the match is recorded.

Can I change the reward after I post?

No. Once a post is live, the reward is locked so finders can rely on what’s advertised. If you want a different amount, delete the post and create a new one with the new reward.

Privacy & Data

Is my data secure?

Yes, we use industry-standard encryption and security practices to protect your personal information.

How long is my data stored?

Your data is retained for as long as you keep an account with us. Delete your account and we remove it. See our Privacy Policy for details.

What information is visible to others?

Posts on the public feed are anonymous — your name, picture, and email aren’t attached. Others see your post category, description, photos, and an approximate location (a radius, not an exact address). Your name and picture only become visible inside a private conversation after a claim or match.

How do I delete my account or data?

You can delete your account from Settings > Danger Zone. This will permanently remove all your posts and personal data. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Safety

How do I safely make an exchange?

Always meet in a public place during daylight hours. Consider bringing a friend and let someone know where you are going. Always settle the reward through GotBack — payments handled outside the platform aren’t protected by us and we can’t guarantee anything that happens off-platform.

How do I report a suspicious post or user?

Click the flag icon on any post or profile to report it. Our team will review all reports and remove the post if necessary.
